No-show is when a passenger does not board a scheduled flight and has not canceled or rebooked in advance. This label applies specifically to someone who simply misses the flight and does not notify the airline. Because there’s no cancellation, the airline may cancel the remaining segments of the itinerary or enforce the fare rules, which can mean losing the value of unused portions or needing a new ticket to travel later. This is different from standing-by, where a traveler has no confirmed seat yet and is hoping for an available one; an open ticket is a ticket with value that can be applied to future travel; canceled would mean the flight or booking was canceled, not just that the passenger didn’t show up.
